After an absence of more than 12 months, Orient-Express' Road to Mandalay river cruiser began sailing Myanmar's Ayeyarwady River again on August 26, 2009, plying the scenic waters between Bagan and Mandalay.
The re-launch follows a complete remodeling and refurbishment, led by French-born and Laos-based architect Francois Greck and carried out by teams of local craftsman, after damage suffered in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. The "new" ship now features larger cabins and a capacity of just 82 passengers, down from 108, making for an even more roomy onboard experience.
As before, the Road To Mandalay will offer a range of itineraries along Burma's main artery giving passengers access to the very heart of the country. Three-, four- and seven-night cruise itineraries will be available between Bagan and Mandalay as well as three special voyages each year to Bhamo, in the remote northern area of the country. The stylish new surroundings onboard, courtesy of lead interior designer Ali Kennedy in collaboration with Ateliers de la Péninsule, complement the color and atmosphere of the riverbanks seen through its picture windows, while maintaining the ship's relaxed and comfortable feeling.
A new spacious Governor's Suite and 34 new State and Deluxe Cabins have been created with maximum comfort and en-suite bathrooms featuring Burmese Jade wall tiles and large walk-in showers.
The restaurant, too, has received a complete makeover with a fresh new color scheme of soft yellows, greens and reds, which complements the traditional Burmese natural matting on the walls and ceiling, hand-woven by local village craftsmen. The detailed teak wall carvings are handmade by Burmese artisans in Amanpura near Mandalay. New chrome wall and standing lights designed by Greck give the restaurant a more intimate feel, which is decked out with furnishings covered in luxurious Jim Thompson fabrics from Bangkok.
Outside, the Top Deck and Bar boast a newly laid teak floor with comfortable large cane sofas and chairs made in Yangon. The sun deck area features 15 new 'steamer'-style deck chairs, also made in Yangon. Jim Thompson fabrics have been used for the cushions.
The new Road To Mandalay Wellbeing Centre offers exercise machines, floor workout area and changing facilities. Next door to this is the hair and beauty treatment area, which offers a range of relaxing treatments using Decleor products.
New menus have been developed for the re-launch of the restaurant by Executive Chef Christian Markert-Bourdon. A buffet-style lunch is served on the Observation Deck or in the Restaurant in seven different themes - Burmese, Shan, Thai, Indonesian, Chinese, Indian and European. For dinner, guests can partake of dishes from the Asian- and European-style menus that change daily.

Antarctica Cruises

Why would anyone want to visit Antarctica? Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, and driest place on earth. The tourist season is a scant four months long. There are no shops, piers, idyllic beaches, or tourist venues at the Antarctic ports of call. The ocean crossing from South America, Africa, or Australia is almost always a rough one.
Despite all of these perceived negatives, Antarctica has always been on my list of "must see" destinations. We cruised to Antarctica in January 2005 on the Hapag-Lloyd Hanseatic, and can now understand why so many others express an interest in visiting a continent with such a hostile environment.
Lucky for those of us who love to cruise, the best way to visit Antarctica is via cruise ship. Since most of the wildlife in Antarctica is found on the ice-free narrow ridges of coastline around the islands and mainland, cruise passengers don't have to miss out on any of the interesting sea, land or air creatures of this exciting continent. In addition, Antarctica has no tourism infrastructure such as hotels, restaurants, or tour guides, so a cruise ship is an ideal vehicle for visiting the sixth continent. One note-you won't get to the South Pole on a ship. Unlike the North Pole, which lies in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, the South Pole is hundreds of miles inland, situated on a high plateau. Some visitors to the South Pole have even experienced altitude sickness!

Background
Although 95 percent of Antarctica is covered with ice, there are rocks and soil under all that ice and the continent is twice the size of Australia. Antarctica is also our highest continent, with over half of the land over 6500 feet above sea level. The highest peak on Antarctica is over 11000 feet. Since Antarctica gets less than 4 inches of precipitation a year, all of it in the form of snow, it qualifies as a polar desert.
The ocean surrounding Antarctica is one of its most interesting features. The winds and sea currents interact ferociously, causing this area of the ocean to be very turbulent. The Antarctic Convergence is the region where the warm, saltier waters flowing south from South America meet the cold, dense and fresher waters moving north from Antarctica. These conflicting currents are constantly mixing and result in a very rich environment for an abundance of sea plankton. The plankton attracts large numbers of birds and sea mammals. The end result is the famous rough seas of the Drake Passage and Tierra del Fuego and the thousands of fascinating creatures that survive this inhospitable climate.

When to Go to Antarctica
The tourist season is only four months long in Antarctica-from November to February. The rest of the year is not only very cold-as low as 50 degrees below zero-but also dark or nearly dark most of the time. Even if you could stand the cold you couldn't see anything! Each month has its own attractions. November is early summer, and the birds are courting and mating. December and January feature hatching penguins and baby chicks, along with warmer temperatures and up to 20 hours of daylight each day. February is late summer, but the whale sightings are more frequent and the chicks are beginning to become fledglings. There is also less ice in the late summer, and the ships are not as booked up as earlier in the season.

Types of Cruise Ships Visiting Antarctica
Although explorers have sailed Antarctic waters since the 15th century, the first tourists didn't arrive until 1957 when a Pan American flight from Christchurch, New Zealand landed for a short time at McMurdo Sound. Tourism really picked up starting in the late 1960s when expedition tour operators began offering trips. The past few years, over 30 ships have carried tourists into Antarctic waters. Almost 30,000 of these tourists land ashore in Antarctica and another 13,000 either sail in Antarctic waters or fly over the continent. Ships vary in size from less than 50 to over 1000 passengers. The ships also vary in amenities, from basic supply vessels to small expedition ships to mainstream cruise ships to small luxury cruise ships such as the Hapag-Lloyd Hanseatic we sailed on.
One word of caution-some ships (especially the larger ships such as those operated by Crystal, Holland America and Princess) do not allow passengers to go ashore in Antarctica. They provide wonderful vistas of the spectacular Antarctic scenery, but only from the deck of the ship. This "sail-by" type of Antarctic cruise, often called an Antarctic "experience", helps keep the price down, but can be a disappointment if landing on Antarctic soil is important to you. The International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators requires its members to pledge to send no more than 100 persons ashore at any one time. Larger ships cannot logistically meet this pledge, and any cruise line disregarding it would probably not get a permit to sail to Antarctica again.

Although large ships cannot land passengers ashore in Antarctica, they do have some advantages. Larger ships such as those used by Princess, Holland America, and Crystal normally have deeper hulls and stabilizers, making the cruise a smoother ride. That might be very important in the rough waters of the Drake Passage and South Atlantic. The second advantage is that since these ships are larger, the fare may not be quite as high as on a smaller ship. The traditional cruise ships also offer amenities and activities not available on some smaller expedition ships.
For those like me who want to "touch down" in Antarctica, many of the smaller ships have either ice-strengthened hulls or qualify as ice breakers. The ice-strengthened ships like the Hapag-Lloyd Hanseatic we sailed on can go further south into the ice flows than a traditional ship, but only ice breakers can venture close into shore in the Ross Sea. If seeing the famous Ross Island explorers' huts is important to you, you might make sure you are on a ship that is qualified to traverse the Ross Sea and includes it in the itinerary. One disadvantage of ice breakers is that they have very shallow drafts, which makes them ideal for sailing in icy waters, but not for sailing in rough seas. You will get a lot more motion on an ice breaker than a traditional ship.
There are no cruise ship docks in Antarctic. Smaller ships such as the Hanseatic that take passengers ashore use inflatable Zodiac boats powered by outboard engines rather than tenders. These small boats are ideal for the "wet" landings on the undeveloped shores of Antarctica, but anyone with mobility problems might have to stay onboard the cruise ship. The Zodiacs normally carry from 9 to 14 passengers, a driver and a guide.

Getting to Your Ship
Most ships traveling to Antarctica start in South America. Ushuaia, Argentina is probably the most popular embarkation point. Passengers flying from North America or Europe pass through Buenos Aires or Santiago on their way to the southern tip of South America. It's about a 3-hour flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia and another 36 hours of sailing from there to the Antarctic Peninsula.
Some ships sail from South Africa, Australia or New Zealand to Antarctica. If you look at a , you can see that it is quite a bit further from those locations to the continent than from South America, which means the trip would involve more sea days.

The forestry investment process in 3 steps
As soon as you have decided on your level of investment your account manager will be able to advise the best possible forestry allocations available.
Commercial harvesting of the timber will generally take place over a set period. The revenue for the standing timber will be distributed back to the client minus a 10% fee payable to the management team.

Forestry Investment Risks

Planning & Preparation
As with any investment there will always be a number of risks to consider. Forestry risks are based on biological and natural incidents and we take every step to limit exposure to these.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 0.5% of all forestry is destroyed by fire, pests and disease etc. With managed forestry, the risk historically has been a lot lower at approximately 0.3%. Even so, we are happy to promise to restock any forestry that has been destroyed. The lumber at this time will be salvaged and sold on.

Fire
There have been very few forest fires in Canada and America; even so, we have special precautions in place to prevent serious damage to our forestry plantations if ever there was a fire. We plan our plantations with appropriate fire breaks.

Pests & Disease
There are a few well known pests and diseases that can affect our crops especially in the early years. Different species are planted side by side to minimize the risk of these pests spreading our forest management teams know exactly what to look out for and how to treat any problems as soon as they occur.

Flooding & Drought
Water is a vital resource in some areas that do not receive enough yearly rainfall and it is the first consideration when constructing a new forestry plantation within hotter areas. We make sure that there is always enough water being pumped into these areas to support effective growth.

Forest replant warranty
If for whatever reason the forestry crop fails at any time within the allotted investment term, we will replant the area free of charge. In addition, any lumber that can be salvaged will be sold and the gains will be returned to the investor minus a 10% fee payable to Greenwood Management.

The U.S. government, through the Department of Veterans Affairs (formerly the Veterans Administration), administers insurance programs for active members of the armed forces and veterans of military service. Instituted under the terms of the War Risk Insurance Act of 1917, U.S. Government Life Insurance permitted those on active duty during World War I to purchase low-cost life insurance in amounts up to $10,000. About 4.5 million persons applied for this insurance during the war. National Service Life Insurance, instituted in 1940, provided insurance for members of the armed forces in World War II on the same basis as had existed in World War I. This program was later extended to include World War II veterans, who were eligible for insurance whether or not they had obtained policies while in service. No new policies were issued under either program after April 1951.Legislation enacted in 1965 established Servicemen's Group Life Insurance (SGLI) for personnel on active duty in the uniformed services and Ready Reservists. This program is currently in effect. Under the present program up to $50,000 of group life insurance is available on a voluntary basis to each individual, including all reservists and members of the National Guard. SGLI, now supervised by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is underwritten by more than 300 life insurance companies. A program begun in 1974 provides for automatic conversion of SGLI to a 5-year nonrenewable policy known as Veteran's Group Life Insurance (VGLI). Coverage is available in units of $5000 up to the amount of SGLI in force at the time of separation. VGLI is available to service personnel separated on or after August 1, 1974, and to reservists injured while on active duty. At the termination of the 5-year policy the insurance policy can be converted to an individual commercial policy with the participating companies at standard rates regardless of the policyholder's health.Veterans Mortgage Life Insurance is available to totally disabled veterans, primarily paraplegics, who receive a grant to purchase specially adapted housing. In 1976 the amount of insurance coverage was increased to $40,000.

London Session

Range trading has defined the European morning today. EUR/USD pushed above the 1.4300 level in Asian hours, however, the gains were reversed and a narrow 1.4255 to 1.4285 range has ensued. The JPY is moderately higher across the board on the back of speculation that Japanese investors will repatriate earnings from US treasury redemptions and coupon payments. However, the JPY is now trading off its best levels vs the USD, the EUR and the GBP. While the AUD was hit overnight by news stemming from China, some of these losses have been reversed during European hours.
Most Asian stock indices pushed higher overnight. By contrast, the Shanghai composite lost 3% as existing concerns about a tightening of credit and potential falls in exports were exacerbated by comments from the Ministry of Industry that will be a three year moratorium on approvals on expansion in steel and iron industries. The news hits the AUD. Australia's industrial commodity based exports to China have been instrumental in allowing its economy to avoid technical recession this year. However, the bear move in the AUD was short lived as fresh comfort was drawn from comments from RBA Governor Stevens that the budget deficit will be smaller that the government forecast in May. AUD/USD bounced off a low just below 0.8400 and is presently little changed from last night's close.
The pound fell sharply early in the London session vs both the USD and the EUR, though the supply was not triggered by UK economic data. There was no tier 1 data released this morning although a report of a 14% y/y rise in house repossessions during Q2 is a reminder of the vulnerable position of the UK economy. Sterling subsequently recouped most of its earlier losses.
The release of Eurozone July CPI at -0.7% y/y was weaker than expected. While in recessionary condition the absence of any inflation pressures may cause alarm, the fact that both Germany and France unexpectedly returned to growth in Q2 underpins the ECB's predications that the negative price pressures will be temporary. The CPI data did not impact the market.
This afternoon, US Jul CPI, Jul Industrial production and Aug preliminary University of Michigan consumer confidence are due. Canadian Jun manufacturing sales are also scheduled for release.

WORLD FOREX: Euro Rallies Vs Dollar Ahead US Bank Earnings

Thin holiday trade and a late-day bounce in U.S. stocks market helped the euro retrace all of its losses against the dollar from the previous week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished above its intraday low, supporting the risk appetite trade out of the dollar, a funding currency. The euroforex had already strengthened overnight, ahead of key U.S. first-quarter earnings releases expected later this week. In the coming days, JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C) and others are scheduled to report earnings.
Technical trading was also likely a major factor in allowing the euro to advance more than two U.S. cents over the course of Monday's session. More traders hopped on as the currency broke through technically important levels, further extending the euro's rally.
But currency movements were likely exaggerated with many markets, including much of Europe, still shut for the Easter holiday. The forex market thin trading conditions often result in volatility.
The euro gained as high as $1.3395 and Y134.02, its highest levels since last Tuesday.
The dollar was also sold against the yen. It fell to a two-session low of Y99.86.
U.S. data that could swing currencies again on Tuesday include March retail sales and the producer price index.
Monday afternoon, the euro was at $1.3376, well above $1.3142 late Friday. The dollar forex market was at Y100.04, down from Y100.38, according to EBS. The euro was at Y133.82, up from Y131.95. The U.K. pound forex market was at $1.4869. Data for the pound were unavailable Friday due to the holiday. The dollar was at CHF1.1314, down from CHF1.1579.
Sentiment on the euro-dollar pair have been in flux since late March on equally uncertain economic outlooks for both the euro zone and U.S. This had led the pair to fluctuate back and forth inside a range without any clear direction yet.
Meanwhile, the Australian dollar, another risk-positive currency that has been rallying for more than a month, rose to its highest level since October at $0.7323.
Besides technical positioning, the Aussie dollar was also aided by a report that showed Chinese lending rose to a record high in March. China is a major trading partner of Australia.
China's broadest measure of money supply, M2, surged 25.51% at the end of March from a year earlier as new yuan loans hit a new monthly record high, government data showed Saturday.
China's central bank on Sunday said it would ensure there was enough credit to meet the needs of the economy. While the PBOC said it was sticking to a moderately loose monetary policy, it wants the credit to go to the right sectors and said it would control loans going to the wrong ones.
The Canadian dollar also mounted a significant advance Monday, rising to its highest level since the beginning of February on the rebound in riskier trades in a thin market.
The U.S. dollar fell to C$1.2166 from C$1.2256 late Thursday.

Weak retail sales report halts stock market rally

Wall Street shifted into reverse Tuesday after a surprisingly weak retail sales report punctured investors' optimism about the economy.
The poor sales data, combined with a sharp drop in wholesale prices, came just as the corporate earnings season, usually a volatile time in the market, got under way. The Dow Jones industrials lost nearly 140 points.
Underscoring the market's sensitivity, shares in Intel Corp. fell sharply in after-hours trading after the chipmaker reported weaker results after the bell and didn't offer a forecast for revenue.
Investors are already braced for bad earnings but are highly anxious about forecasts from companies that could indicate a weaker economy. Poor outlooks in the last earnings season in January derailed a 20 percent rally, and some fear the market's current five-week rally could be vulnerable as well.
Financial stocks tumbled after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. announced strong profits but said it would raise $5 billion to repay government bailout money. Investors speculated that other major banks might follow suit, which would put pressure on their stocks. Citigroup Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are also due to report results this week.
The Dow closed down 137.63, or 1.7 percent, at 7,920.18.
Broader measures also lost ground after three days of gains. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 17.23, or 2 percent, to 841.50, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 27.59, or 1.7 percent, to 1,625.72.
Tuesday's selling was orderly and extended a give-and-take pattern the market has followed since halting a steep slide over the first two months of the year. Stocks have risen from 12-year lows since then on hopes that banks are getting through the worst of their problems and the economy might be bottoming out, though both the Dow and S&P 500 are still below where they started the year.
The unexpected 1.1 slump in retail sales in March undermined the market's brightening outlook for the economy. The drop was far worse than the increase of 0.3 percent that analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected and marked the biggest fall in three months. Investors watch retail sales trends closely as a barometer of consumer spending, which makes up two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.
"The choppy data that we're seeing, whether it's economic or earnings, reminds us that we're still not out of the woods," said Sean Simko, head of fixed income management at SEI Investments in Philadelphia. "The market always has a tendency to go too far too fast."
Investors took little comfort from speeches by President Barack Obama and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that there have been hopeful signs about the economy but that a sustained recovery won't arrive quickly.
A separate report on wholesale prices gave another poor reading on the economy.
The Labor Department said wholesale prices tumbled 1.2 percent in March as the cost of gasoline, other energy products and food fell sharply. Falling prices fan worries about a spiraling effect where consumers and businesses would cut spending out of fear that they would pay too much for something today that could be worth less tomorrow.
The drop in stocks followed more signs that some companies reporting earnings for the first quarter might be able to top Wall Street's modest expectations.
After the end of trading Tuesday, railroad operator CSX said its first-quarter profit fell 30 percent from a year earlier, but the results came in well above Wall Street's expectations.
Johnson & Johnson said before the opening bell that its first-quarter profit dipped, but not as much as expected. The health care products maker was one of four stocks among the 30 that make up the Dow industrials to show a gain. The stock rose 22 cents to $51.37.
Goldman released its results a day early Monday, reporting after the end of trading that it earned $1.66 billion in the quarter, well above what analysts were expecting. The company said it would raise $5 billion in stock in hopes of repaying the $10 billion investment it received from the government last year.
Goldman shares fell $15.04, or 11.6 percent, to $115.11 after its stock offering was priced at $123 per share, a discount of 5.5 percent to Monday's closing price.
Most other financial stocks slid. JPMorgan fell $3, or 8.9 percent, to $30.70, while Morgan Stanley fell $3.22, or 12 percent, to $23.67.
Jeffrey Frankel, president of Stuart Frankel & Co. in New York, says investors are braced for the worst during earnings season. "There is very little that could come out that will spook traders," he said.
In other market moves, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 14.83, or 3.2 percent, to 453.22.
Two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 7.3 billion shares compared with 6.3 billion shares traded Monday.
Bond prices rose after the weak economic readings. That pushed the yield on the 10-year Treasury note down to 2.79 percent from 2.86 percent late Monday Stock Market.
The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.
Light, sweet crude fell 64 cents to settle at stock Market. $49.41 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stockmarket average fell 0.9 percent. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.1 percent, Germany's DAX index gained 1.5 percent, and France's CAC-40 rose 0.9 percent.

The Gold Exchange and the Bretton Woods AgreementIn 1967, a Chicago bank refused a college professor by the name of Milton Friedman a loan in pound sterling because he had intended to use the funds to short the British currency. Friedman, who had perceived sterling to be priced too high against the dollar, wanted to sell the currency, then later buy it back to repay the bank after the currency declined, thus pocketing a quick profit. The bank’s refusal to grant the loan was due to the Bretton Woods Agreement, established twenty years earlier, which fixed national currencies against the dollar, and set the dollar at a rate of $35 per ounce of gold.The Bretton Woods Agreement, set up in 1944, aimed at installing international monetary stability by preventing money from fleeing across nations, and restricting speculation in the world currencies. Prior to the Agreement, the gold exchange standard--prevailing between 1876 and World War I--dominated the international economic system. Under the gold exchange, currencies gained a new phase of stability as they were backed by the price of gold. It abolished the age-old practice used by kings and rulers of arbitrarily debasing money and triggering inflation.But the gold exchange standard didn’t lack faults. As an economy strengthened, it would import heavily from abroad until it ran down its gold reserves required to back its money; consequently, the money supply would shrink, interest rates rose and economic activity slowed to the extent of recession. Ultimately, prices of goods had hit bottom, appearing attractive to other nations, who would rush into buying sprees that injected the economy with gold until it increased its money supply, and drive down interest rates and recreate wealth into the economy. Such boom-bust patterns prevailed throughout the gold standard until the outbreak of World War I interrupted trade flows and the free movement of gold.After the Wars, the Bretton Woods Agreement was founded, where participating countries agreed to try and maintain the value of their currency with a narrow margin against the dollar and a corresponding rate of gold as needed. Countries were prohibited from devaluing their currencies to their trade advantage and were only allowed to do so for devaluations of less than 10%. Into the 1950s, the ever-expanding volume of international trade led to massive movements of capital generated by post-war construction. That destabilized foreign exchange rates as setup in Bretton Woods.The Agreement was finally abandoned in 1971, and the US dollar would no longer be convertible into gold. By 1973, currencies of major industrialized nations floated more freely, as they were controlled mainly by the forces of supply and demand. Prices were floated daily, with volumes, speed and price volatility all increasing throughout the 1970s, giving rise to new financial instruments, market deregulation and trade liberalization.In the 1980s, cross-border capital movements accelerated with the advent of computers and technology, extending market continuum through Asian, European and American time zones. Transactions in foreign exchange rocketed from about $70 billion a day in the 1980s, to more than $1.5 trillion a day two decades later.

The Explosion of the Euromarket

A major catalyst to the acceleration of Forex trading was the rapid development of the eurodollar market; where US dollars are deposited in banks outside the US. Similarly, Euromarkets are those where assets are deposited outside the currency of origin. The Eurodollar market first came into being in the 1950s when Russia’s oil revenue-- all in dollars -- was deposited outside the US in fear of being frozen by US regulators. That gave rise to a vast offshore pool of dollars outside the control of US authorities. The US government imposed laws to restrict dollar lending to foreigners. Euromarkets were particularly attractive because they had far less regulations and offered higher yields. From the late 1980s onwards, US companies began to borrow offshore, finding Euromarkets a beneficial center for holding excess liquidity, providing short-term loans and financing imports and exports.London was, and remains the principal offshore market. In the 1980s, it became the key center in the Eurodollar market when British banks began lending dollars as an alternative to pounds in order to maintain their leading position in global finance. London’s convenient geographical location (operating during Asian and American markets) is also instrumental in preserving its dominance in the Euromarket.
